University of Pisa
Founded in 1343 by Pope Clement VI, the University of Pisa is among Italy’s oldest surviving universities and has played a historic role in science, law, and the humanities.Today it serves about 50,000 students, with over 20 departments offering undergraduate, master’s, single-cycle and doctoral programmes including in medicine, engineering, sciences, humanities, law, and veterinary science.Pisa is especially noted for its research centres (e.g. in physics, computer science, medicine) and was the first Italian university to introduce a degree in computer science. Its architecture mixes historic buildings in Pisa’s city centre with modern labs and scientific infrastructure. Student life is lively, international (many Erasmus and foreign students), and benefits from Pisa’s cultural and academic tradition (including famous alumni).
